Located Oceanfront at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, Hula Grill is one of the most popular restaurants in Honolulu. The restaurant has an open concept and directly faces Waikiki beach that brings in a beautiful breeze throughout the place. Hula Grill has two main areas including the Plantation Bar and Dining room. In the Plantation Bar area, they offer live music daily which can be heard throughout the restaurant. Guests having drinks at the Plantation Bar have the option to choose their food from the bar menu as well as the restaurant's full dinner menu. For those looking for a nice restaurant/bar just to have drinks, Hula Grill offers an extensive drink menu including wines, beers, hand crafted creations, cocktails, smoothies and locally crafted beverages.
After researching for top restaurants in Honolulu, we found so many wonderful reviews for Hula Grill Waikiki and so we made reservations online in advance to guarantee a table during our stay. Since the restaurant was located at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, we were able to valet our car without any troubles. Once we arrived at the restaurant, we were told there was a wait time of 30 minutes and was given a pager. We decided to wait at the bar to enjoy a drink and the live entertainment.
Fresh Squeezed Mai Tai ($12)
Hawaiian pineapple, guava, orange and
passion fruit juices, orgeat, Hana Bay Gold Rum,
orange curacao, and a Diamond Head Gold Rum float
Our bartender recommended their Fresh Squeezed Mai Tai which is one of their most popular cocktails and so I ordered one for myself while Kevin ordered a craft beer. It was my first time trying a Mai Tai and I wasn't prepared for how strong it was going to be. I was able to taste the fresh juices, but the rum was really strong and difficult for me to drink (I still finished it though! lol).
Live Music
View from our table
I loved how open the restaurant was with the cool ocean breeze, and the view was really nice. I'm sure during the day the view of the beach is spectacular.
Garlic Bread Starter
Our server started us off with fresh bread. Try not to fill up on the bread so that you can enjoy all the appetizers and mains!
Filet Mignon Tataki ($16)
Ewa watermelon, chili lime vinaigrette, Hawaiian sea salt
The filet mignon was very tender and the watermelon and vinaigrette added a delicious refreshing touch.
Poke Tacos ($14)
Marinated raw ahi, avocado, Maui onion and wasabi aioli
The tacos are a popular item on their menu and we could see why because they tasted very fresh and amazing!
Makaweli Steak ($39)
100% Grass fed on Kauai and red alaea garlic butter
Kevin ordered the steak which I got to try. The steak was cooked to a nice medium rare and the meat was extremely juicy and tender. Simply delicious!
Macadamia Nut Crusted Fish ($32)
Lemon beurre blanc
I ordered the Macadamia Nut Crusted Fish because I wanted to try something that I couldn't get in Toronto and I was glad I did! The fish was light and flaky, and the macadamia nut on top was very crispy and added a lot of flavour to the fish. I highly recommend this main course!
By the end of our meal we were too full to order any dessert, but we were extremely satisfied with everything we ordered for dinner. We had a wonderful experience at Hula Grill, from their food to their service, and especially the beautiful oceanfront view. I can't wait to be back to try other delicious items on their menu.
