Trip to NYC Day 1

A little over a month ago my boyfriend and I planned a 4-day trip to NYC for the Labour Day long weekend. We were both very excited to tour the city, watch a baseball game and, of course, go on a mini food adventure among the top rated restaurants in the city.

A week before our trip, we started planning out our schedule so that we were well prepared and to make sure we got to experience the most of what the city has to offer. I started researching the best restaurants in NYC, from fast food to steakhouses, and had come up with the following places: Totto Ramen, The Halal Guys, The Boil, Joe's Shanghai, Quality Meats, Shake Shack, and Auntie Anne's Pretzels.

On our first day, we arrived in New York around 3 pm which gave us time to go to the hotel and map out all the activities we had planned before going to dinner. We made our way to Totto Ramen, put our names down on the wait list (1 hour) and headed to a nearby bar so that we didn't have to stand around outside.
We found Molly's Irish Pub a few blocks down and we ordered some beer.

Guinness for the bf and Rolling Rock for me. Refreshing!

When we headed back to Totto Ramen, the line-up was even longer and we had to wait another 10 minutes to be seated. Once we got inside, we were seated on the stools in front of the open kitchen.

For our starters and main, we ordered:
  • Pork Buns ($6 for 2 pc)
  • 2 Totto Spicy Ramen ($11.25) topped with char siu pork ($2.50) and a seasoned boiled egg ($1)

It was our first time trying these pork buns and they were so delicious! The buns were soft and warm, and you can tell the pork had been marinated for a long time. And for the Totto Spicy Ramen, it was honestly the best ramen I've ever tasted! The broth was rich in flavour, the noodles were perfectly cooked and held the flavour from the soup, and the char siu pork and egg complimented the dish very well. This was the perfect way to start our trip!

After dinner, we walked over to Rockefeller Center to tour the Top of the Rock Observation Deck. We bought our tickets and waited an hour for our tour to start. Across the hall from the ticket booth was Auntie Anne's Pretzels! I ordered Auntie Anne's roasted garlic and parmesan soft pretzel. The pretzel itself was delicious, but the worker added way too much garlic seasoning which I ended up dusting off.

This was the view from the Top of the Rock Observation Deck! The city lights looked so beautiful!

We decided to walk back to our hotel so that we could sight-see at the same time. We were so glad we did because we found The Halal Guys!! There was a huge line up but it had gone by pretty quick in 20 minutes.

We both ordered Chicken over Rice which was only $6 each! On the side of the food truck were bottles of their signature white sauce and hot sauce that were self serve. Be careful of their hot sauce, it's extremely spicy!! Our overall impression of this highly raved food truck: love at first bite! The chicken and rice were so delicious and that white sauce was amaaazing. Now this was the perfect way to end the first day in New York!
